RETURN OF THE LEGEND – SPOON SPORTS SW388 FORGED WHEELS

In 1994 Spoon released the world’s lightest aluminium wheels. Developed with help from Desmond Corporation the weight of 3.88kg was achieved and the SW388 was born.

The distinctive design quickly became an icon in the Honda tuning world. The wheels were only produced from 1996 – 1999 where production was promptly stopped as Desmond closed its doors.

With nearly two decades passed we are pleased to announce the return of the legend.

The SW388 is back!

100% manufactured in Japan the wheels are FULLY MACHINE FORGED for superior strength and weight, finished in superior anodised matt black and bought up to date with a new improved recessed hub side mounting face.

Why the recess on the hub side? The arch on the inside surface provides a space not in contact with the surface to apply loads naturally and outwards to improve the fastening strength of the hub and the wheel. This allows the absorption of shock loads on the hubs and knuckles. The design also functions to prevent loosening of the lug nuts.

2018 Japan Visit for Tokyo Auto Salon and Kanpachi Auto & Art Salon

We were unsure about taking a trip to Japan for the Auto Salon in 2018 but when the invite arrived from Spoon to join them for a celebration of 30 years of trading the opportunity couldn’t be missed.

Arriving in Tokyo on Thursday night we went for a quick look around Shinjuku and grabbed some awesome Shabu Shabu for dinner.

The auto salon’s doors didn’t open until midday on Friday so in the morning we took a quick trip up the Tokyo Tower and then made the hour journey to Makuhari Messe.

With Friday being the quieter day, it would have been great to look around however we had pre-arranged appointments with DIXCEL, KWM and finally we wanted to see the auction as two very special Spoon cars were to be sold!

This was the first auction to be held at TAS with Best Heritage Auctions Japan hosting the event. http://bhauction.jp/en/search/

A selection of very special hand-picked cars were to be sold including a 1970 Toyota 2000 GT (Sold for £550,000), 1990 R32 GTR with only 2800km on the clock (Sold for £58,000) and a brand new 2002 R34 GTR Vspec NUR with only 10km on the clock (sold for £228,000)! I think it is fair to say that it shows the calibre of the Spoon Super Taikyu S2000 and Macau challenging NSX when they have been chosen to be in the same auction.

I unfortunately missed the hammer drops on the Spoon cars due to meetings. The S2000 didn’t reach its reserve and the NSX went for a cool £130,000! Hopefully it will used, maintained and displayed by its new owner!

By the time meetings were concluded the doors to TAS were long closed and it was time to head back in to Tokyo for dinner. Found an unusual trendy food floor at a department store in Shinjuku close to the hotel serving a Japanese take on Mediterranean and Italian food. I was so tired I can’t even remember what I ordered!

Thanks to Jet lag I was up at 5am on Saturday which gave me loads of time to catch up on emails and make some meeting notes. The Spoon party didn’t open its doors until 3pm so we ventured over to Sensoji Temple for a little more sightseeing. Lunch was a coffee then more train rides to Ogikubo station. A short walk to TYPEONE we arrived with spare time to get ready for the party.

Here’s the KAS blog - https://www.spoonsports.eu/news/kas

After the party we were lucky that the guys from Spoon Japan had time to host us for dinner and drinks. I didn’t catch the name of the place, but it was close to Ogikubo station and served some awesome Sashimi. We were lucky to catch the last train back to Shinjuku to get our heads down for the last day.

Up early again on Sunday and got over to TAS as a free day to take a good look around. Many business cards exchanged and got to meet a childhood legend, Smokey Nagata

We made our way back to the hotel to collect our bags and headed by Taxi to the airport. The crazy taxi driver got lost a couple of times but we had plenty of time so it was all in good humour. This brings the trip to a close.

Finally we are pleased to announce a new partnership with KWM. https://www.kiwami-jp.com/global/inchup/eng_inchup.html We have the EU exclusive on the INCH UP BRAKE KIT. This will be very popular brake upgrade for the S2000 and GT86. The Kit replaces all four caliper carriers with a cast one piece component to allow the use of the considerably larger supplied rotor. Separate blog post about this coming soon!

2018 Spoon Sports Kanpachi Auto & Art Salon

With great pleasure we bring you our 2018 Auto Salon report with a difference. This year was the 30th anniversary of Spoon Sports. Spoon decided to not exhibit at the Tokyo Auto Salon, but rather hold their own Auto and Art Salon at their famous TYPOENE workshops.

The party was held at TYPEONE that was designed by the highly acclaimed Torafu Architects Inc. http://torafu.com/works/sst featured in numerous media across the globe like Dezeen https://www.dezeen.com/ . The workshop also appears in backgrounds within the newest Gran Turismo GT Sports game, and has become a must visit location for car enthusiasts all over the world. Spoon’s demo cars were on display as well as sales of Kanpachi Auto & Art Salon limited merchandise.

Merchandise on sale here (limited production) - https://www.spoonsports.eu/catalogsearch/result/?q=org-apr

In 1992 Tatsuru Ichishima created Spoon with the vision of creating performance products for the Honda market. 30 years later the Spoon brand is famous among Japanese tuning scene all around the world. Ichishama is commonly referred to as one of the Godfathers of JDM tuning.

To celebrate the return of the Civic to the Japanese market after an absence of seven years. Spoon chose to display a number of their historic Civic Race Cars along side the most recent FK7 Civic Sport and FK8 Civic Type R. Both of the new cars have already had a spattering of Spoon development products like, Rereleased Sw388 wheels, 6 pot calipers, Prototype N1, carbon bonnets and the classics we all know and love like the Carbon bucket seat and shift knob

It is obviously apparent that with everything Spoon does there is a strong connection with Art. Weather that be in beautiful products of the striking design of TYPEONE. A further expression of the company passion was included in the Auto & Art Salon with various artworks exhibited though out the building. Some of which were previously commissioned by Spoon such as the line drawing works of Hiromi Karishu from the 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon.

Live art performances were held on both floors of the exhibition. With Hiromi Karishu carrying out a new piece of work to the rear of the FK7 on the ground floor and Genta Kosumi demonstrating a live art performance to music provided by tatalaYAVZ

A favourite moment for me was sitting listening to Ichishima being interviewed about his career. I obviously understood very little of the conversation but it was accompanied by a great slideshow of images from the last 30 years. The slides included Pictures from Europe of the 1999 Nürburgring S2000 and the even earlier 3rd gen Civic that competed at Snetterton 24 hour in around 1993.

As the evening went on the live music continued and drinks were provided to the guests from all corners of the world. For us it was a truly great chance to meet and spend time with some of the other Authorised dealers.

With so much going on you would have been forgiven if you missed the Gran Tourismo simulators on the first floor allowing visitors to challenge world famous circuits in either the Honda FK2 or NSX applied with the oh so familiar Spoon livery.

As we are sure many questions will follow about how to obtain the Spoon livery please see these instructions provided by Gaijin Garage: Please follow these steps to unlock the Spoon Livery for the NSX-GT3 and the Civic Type R (FK2)…

Firstly, you must obtain the NSX Group3 / GT3 and Civic Type R (FK2).
For the NSX Group 3 you can obtain the car by season contract in the Championship.

Donnington - 30th September 2017

QUALIFICATION

Words “Ben Rushworth”

So, after my sworn reform to get time management into order, what else could I do but completely cock up and turn up 10 minutes late for quali, thinking I was early.

What proceeded after was a *bleep* resulting in me just managing to get 4th, which is just plain *bleep*.

However, that didn’t mean quali wasn’t interesting, my new free range camera had a nice trip around the cockpit.

I had a lovely moment exiting the Craners, which is my first ever spin at Donny, and quite a good one might I add. I thought trying to take it flat was a hero move, but the car and I just wasn't ready.

In fact, my reference for speed at Donny is my old Metro, and suffice to say I was tuning up at corners significantly faster and having to totally re adjust everything..... but hey, this all happened over 5 laps or so......

Quali VLOG - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9TFjb74-ic

RACE 1

Words “Ben Rushworth”

Sometimes when you try your hardest to employ strategy, that’s when luck leaves you standing holding your *bleep*

Full of confidence in the car and myself, unlucky calls on setup just left me frustrated and frankly, annoyed with myself.

Last race weekend of the season and you think to yourself, weather looks bad..... should I get those new inters, should I get a new set of drys......nah....she'll be alright.

She wasn't, she was an absolute ball buster.

Race was meant to be dry, we went out with the skys clearing, sun poking out, and the expected downpour not appearing to come until much later in the day.

I hate weather forecasters..... is there another job where you can so routinely get things wrong and stay employed? haha

Suffice to say, keeping the thing on the track was hard, slow and frustrating, wet lines didn’t work, dry lines didn’t work, my car didn’t want to turn....couldn’t get a smidgen of power down. But the brakes were badass!

Race 1 VLOG - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBpga8zFyos&t=12s

RACE 2

Words “Ben Rushworth”

Well, its come down to this!

A single point separating Ali (green Fiesta) and I and the title on the line.

When I started the season, this was a shakedown year, new car, new series, new competitors, and a lot of unknowns.......... let’s look at it subjectively, I've only driven a DC2 a total of 12 races over 6 weekends, so it’s been a testing time.

I thought I might finish 3rd this year, but coming into Donny, with it on the cars, I was dead set to take the title.

With the weather predictions working in my favour, all I could do was run with it and take the gamble.

Unfortunately, my wet setup went to waste as the race was bone dry when we went to assembly. I had to pedal extra hard, but realistically it was almost futile as I just had no answer to the power advantage, and Donny is not a stop start circuit, it’s all about flow and grunt.

I hope you enjoy the final race, and thanks for taking this little journey with me, I hope to really step things up next season and bring some out of car content over winter.

words “Ben Rushworth”

Quali was a nice easy session to get a few banker laps in, nothing too stressful. The track was super green after the constant rain so finding the grip was key, as was a clear circuit. So, I made my life easier by making it to the assembly second to last!

Probably the only relaxed session of the entire weekend!

Tried to get in a few Q&A answers in, but really, I need an endurance race to answer anything! haha

Quali VLOG - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTwEaD7AOyI

words “Ben Rushworth”

Before going out it was a tense moment trying to decide on tyre choice as it started sprinkling just as we were called, but a delay from the race before meant we were pushed back to after lunch, and a sunny patch arrived and we all stayed on dry tyres...thankfully.

The car was substantially better than it has been for a long time, things are coming together, and the crazy oversteer is drastically reduced, but I still have to be careful of turning in with a trailing brake.

The new brakes were being used in anger for the first time over prolonged period, so they weren't up to their best, although still very good, they started to gas out or similar, and felt like they were getting a bit toasty in the second half of the race – this was probably due to insufficient bedding in procedure due to time.

Overall, satisfied with the result, but what a great race for the series and class.

Race 1 VLOG - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjSPwkDr2zY

words “Anthony Smith – Taikyu”

I travelled up on the Sunday morning to watch Ben, I had intended to be there for both race one and 2 however received a call from Ben to be sent on the hunt for a set of wheel spacers. With the weather turning in, Ben when to fit his wets and found that he had forgotten to test fit the wheels after installing the new Monoblock calipers! After a rather large detour I found a set and arrived with about an hour to spare. Luckily the weather held out and the spacers were not needed.

Race 2 was called, Ben made his way to the outside of front row. A cracking start saw ben pull away from the more powerful Fiesta of Alistair Camp. He maintained the lead until lap 5 where Alistair briefly out powered him over the start finish line. A ballsy move on the outside of turn one ensured Ben returned to 1st position by the exit of Deene. Three laps later Ben took the chequered flag with Alister in close second.

Ben Rushworth - Round 5 - 750mc Hot hatch Championship Brands Hatch

Sponsored Car & Driver Ben Rushworth Says:

The weekend started with some pretty rough times at testing, with the cars balance nowhere near as good as it was at the previous rounds, however with a lot of big changes made, we slowly got the car back to the crisp balance it has before.

I was confident of doing well at Brands as its my home track and I always do well there, however it would be a big ask to compete on the same level as the highly developed fiesta. As I went round it was hard to find clear space to make a decent run, but I managed to find some and my pit board showed 3rd, which was ok and behind the two fiestas. I knew I could go faster from testing and was aiming for second as its the best starting position at Brands. However, I pushed a tad too hard and took pole by 0.001 seconds......since I had pole, I thought I'd make a real attempt and cleared another 0.2 seconds from second.

Race 1 was extremely exciting. I got a mega start as I always seem to do in this car, however by the time we got to druids, I had been out dragged up the hill and had to slot into second place. A mistake into clearways on the first lap on cold rear tyres saw me get a poor exit and I was down to third. Time to get to work! I had the pace around the circuit, but I just couldnt make use of my higher corner exit speeds, as I would start passing for second, I would slowly be returned to 3rd with a lack of straightline pace......which was highly frustrating. At the end of the race I was still in 3rd having wiped out half of my splitter on the rear tyre of Joe Ferguson, and missed out fastest lap by 0.02 seconds. All in all, an exciting race and gave me the confidence to know I could run toe to toe with the fiestas.

Race two was the exact opposite. Full of confidence and knowing my FL in testing, I set off with another amazing start and started to clear off from lap one, building a small gap every lap. When in clean air and track, I could run my ideal line and not get baulked by slower apex speeds. I won the race without any challenge from behind, attained fastest lap and set a new track record.

Overall a great weekend and showed me what the car is capable of on a small circuit where power isnt key, so hopefully Cadwell is more of the same!

One key attribute to the great races is the amazing starts I've been able to make in the new car. I'm not known for amazing starts at all, but this season I've been making some real crackers. The Spoon LSD has been quite key to this, as its quite an aggressive diff with a high preload, traction has been just amazing on the car. Off the line and out of corners I can chop car lengths out of people infront, its been an amazing bonus to the car and I'm highly greatful to Taikyu for supplying me with a great LSD.

** Race Report ** - 750MC Roadsports - Round 1 - Oulton Park - 2nd April 2016

750MC Roadsports - Round 1 - Oulton Park - 2nd April 2016

Interesting start to the season for the Burn! Motorsport racing effort. At last minute Anthony decided to Race along side James Rudecki and his Spoon Sports Eu supported Honda CR-Z in the CARTEK Roadsports endurance series. This meant throwing together a race ready car in our spare time within a couple of weeks. Whist the essentials were completed there is much work still required on the car.

Steady rainfall ensured the newcomers to Oulton park proceeded with caution during qualifying. Luckily the rain eased up at the beginning of the race to allow a dry line to develop during.

James spent the off season building a new engine, losing some weight (from the car) and finishing a few of the Job's from last year. The hard work paid off qualifying 2nd in class D finishing in the same spot!

Having never driven Oulton before and only 7 laps completed in qualifying Anthony was apprehensive going in to the 45 minute race. After lengthy battles with the M3's from Calss A and then the RX8 and Clio Cup from Class C, loss of VTEC saw the Integra DC2 take 3rd in Class and 8th overall. Despite the loss of VTEC Anthony took the fastest lap in class of 1:42.53

A positive start to the season despite the changing weather and troubles. We look forward to getting both cars back out at Silverstone on the 7th of May.

Thanks to Spoon Sports EU, DIXCEL UK, Yokohama UK and Bonsai Cars; without your support it wouldn't be possible.

PART 4: ZF1 HONDA CR-Z SPOON INSPIRED RACE CAR

We had eventful weekend supporting James with his CR-Z at the first CARTEK Road Sports Race event Donnington Park. Unfortunately complications saw further delays to the build but nothing early starts, late nights and an experienced mechanic couldn’t sort. James again summarises his experiences below.

CRZ Race Car Build Part 4 (Donnington Park [Test Day - Take 2 and Race 1]):

After the heartbreak of the previous week, we pursued with trying to isolate the electrical fault and eventually pinpointed it to a missing switch that had been erroneously removed from the car when the wiring loom was removed for spraying the cage. The engine now ran like a dream! We’re back in business!!!

With our first race less than a week away we booked a track day for testing on the Friday before race day hoping that we could gain some valuable data to help us with our race set up. However before we could even think of racing, we had to ensure that the car was MSA compliant in every way and so we had to push on through with the installation of all of the mandatory safety devices.

We started by adding extra mounting points for the harness as we settled with a 6-point Magnum Ultralite courtesy of our friends at TRS. We continued with a long list of other devices which included: Hood Pins, Tow Straps (TRS), Rear LED rain light and Battery isolator (Cartek). We foolishly thought this to not be too much work to have to complete in just under a week, but we were soon to learn differently. As you all know the CR-Z is a Hybrid, which makes the simple installation of a battery isolator increasingly more difficult. This along with the fact that we only had wiring diagrams from a USDM version which is subtly different, made it evermore trying. Since the engine works like a generator, you could disconnect the 12V battery and remove it from the car and the engine would continue to run happily! After much testing and tracing, we finally worked out how the system works and that there’s only one real way of installing it to work as required by the MSA. Thanks to Iain at work for helping us with this, your assistance was most appreciated.

With the isolator wired up and working it was time to continue on with the fire extinguisher system before re-mounting the doors, front bumper, scuttle panel and under trays before checking the car over ready for the test day. Unfortunately I was delayed at work the day before the race and had to collect a trailer for transporting the car the following day which meant that I didn’t start the outstanding jobs until late into the evening. Luckily another CR-Z UK Forum friend, Dan Sopher, was available to lend a hand and get the doors on etc as Bobby was booked up a lot that week with other commitments. All was looking promising when at around 1am we encountered another electrical fault with the replaced loom. It was like déjà vu! I sent a message across to Anthony at BURN!/Spoon EU filling him in on the situation with despair, but he calmly urged me to get some rest and told me that they’d be over in the morning and would somehow get the car ready for the test day, it might just be a little later starting than initially intended.

So I arrived for signing on bright and early and awaited my team mates to join me at the track. I was still in a daze and couldn’t quite believe it was happening. A big effort from the Burn! Mechanics, Dan and Anthony, saw the car together for testing on the Friday, although the remaining work was considerably more than they were expecting. Seriously HUGE thanks to you guys!

Although it had been a frustrating couple of weeks the Spoon inspired CR-Z finally hit the track at Donnington. Entered in the 750 Motor Club CARTEK Roadsports endurance series, we looked forward to testing on the Friday and racing on the Saturday. The short Friday practice was promising showing great reliability and handling. The remainder of the test day we used to calculate fuel burn rates, bed in the new brakes and scrub the tires in ready for the race. The car worked perfectly which was amazing given that it was her first outing! Big shout out to Bobby for all his sleepless nights and hard work on the car!

Some additional works on Friday night and Saturday morning were required to get the car through scrutineering but again we pushed on through and got her ready. A wet qualifying threw up further complications due to a lack of ventilation. Some quick thinking and clever ducting saw the car back on the track with time to compete the qualifying.

Unfortunately despite being race ready we didn't get a chance to participate in the actual race due to a prior online error and subsequent oversubscription of the race. We were put in on the reserve list but this meant that a red flag and a drop outs would have been required to enable us to race. To our disappointment this did not transpire and the safety car was very busy due to a scrappy start and then for much of the race which was held under the yellow flag.

We hope for better luck on the next outing and look forward to some racing.

PART 3: ZF1 HONDA CR-Z SPOON INSPIRED RACE CAR

There has been a great deal of progress with this build since our last blog post. To date the car has now been tested and raced! However it’s not been plain sailing all the way. Below James has put in to words the remainder of the build.

CRZ Race Car Build Part 3 (Test Day 1):

Since receiving the car back a little later than expected Bobby and I had the mammoth task of essentially rebuilding our shell into a track ready car for our practice session at Castle Combe, in just 2 ½ Days!!! It was clear that this was an almost impossible task; however, with a huge effort we managed to get all the necessary standard parts reinstalled, including the IMA battery and associated cabling, trunk lid etc, before continuing with the upgrades.

To give ourselves the best possible chance at completing the car we stuck to the bare essentials that we were confident we could complete which started with upgrading the standard suspension for some Spoon Fixed Dampers and Progressive Springs which fitted perfectly as we expected.

We then swiftly moved onto the brakes and swapped out the tiny 262mm discs and OEM calipers with some real stopping power. A set of Spoon Monoblock calipers and 300mm conversion discs were mounted on the front along with Dixcel pads, before swapping the rear pads over for a set of Spoon pads. We finished by changing the fluid for Dixcel 328 Racing and bleeding the new HEL braided system along with its new partnering components. The car was beginning its transformation.

We pushed on through the night getting the engine running again. The A/C was completely removed, including: the pump, hoses, matrix and core. To finish this off a fresh batch of coolant and shorter drive belt were added.

Next for a few performance upgrades for the engine, including the Spoon throttle body, Spoon Fit GE8 intake chamber and second decat pipe. Last but not least our lovely new CR93 wheels professionally equipped by Black Boots with R888’s courtesy of TOYO were fitted.

After working for 20hrs straight on the last day, including our full time jobs, we finally had her back together. We held our breath as we clicked the ignition over. Lights flashing like a Christmas tree, but none that we weren’t expecting. We depressed the clutch and for the first time in approximately one month we pressed the start button. She turned over and the engine burst into life, but for slightly less time than we’d have liked; in fact for about half a second. Looking at each other in despair we began a gruelling 4hr fault finding session only to trace it back to a fuel supply issue, but with the wiring diagrams in the manual that we’d lent out to our engine guru, we wiped our brows, downed tools, and at 6am, 24hrs later, we began a heart breaking ride home…

What was more depressing was the fact that we’d hired a transporter to get us to the test day but had to return it first thing in the morning, sadly without a refund. The Castle Combe Test Day was a failure, but the amount of work we managed to complete in the available time was tremendous, so hats off Bobby for his drive and determination. He actually forgot he put the wheels on the car and had no recollection of the work we’d completed after about 22hrs! Seriously one hell of a best friend!

Looking forward to a hopefully more positive “Part 4”… James.

Spoon Sport Twinblock Claiper Application Infomation

Integra Type R DC2 (96<98 JDM) – Civic EK4 – Civic EG6 – Jazz / FIT GE8 – Jazz / FIT GK5 – 4x100 or 4x114 hubs.

Installation of the Spoon Twinblock caliper (http://www.spoonsports.eu/45020-dcr-g00.html) has been very popular for the models listed above as not only do you get the performance benefits from the caliper, the installation also requires the use of the larger 282mm conversion disc. For this Spoon supply their 15” Conversion Disc (http://www.spoonsports.eu/45251-5h11416.html), with 8 stud holes to accommodate both 4x100 and 4x114 stud patterns. The caliper will also requires the use of the Civic EK9 Type R pad (http://www.spoonsports.eu/45022-ek9-000.html).

For installation on the Civic EG6, Civic EK4, Jazz GE8 and Jazz GK5 in addition to the conversion disc and brake pads the installation also requires the Spoon Inner Spacer (http://www.spoonsports.eu/45250-t03al.html). The spacer locates in-between the hub face and the disc to centralise the disc within the new Twinblock caliper. Due to the use of the Inner Spacer for this conversion you will also need to install Extended Hub Bolts (http://www.spoonsports.eu/90113-ek9-000.html).

With more than 10 sets of Spoon Calipers always in stock we have got a suitable application for every Hondas needs. Over the next few days we will bring you examples of the different Spoon Caliper options for the more common Honda models.

~~~~~~~~~~
Integra Type R DC2 (98<) - Integra Type R DB8 (98<) - Civic EK9 Type R - 5x114.3 hubs
The Spoon Twinblock caliper (shown in the first image) - http://www.spoonsports.eu/45020-dcr-g00.html was designed to be used with a 282mm disc, this means it can be installed on to the above cars with only a small modification required to the heat shield. The set-up pictured is the actual set up we run on our DC2 with DIXCEL FCR FS rotors and Z type Pads. The calipers fit under most 15 inch + Wheels but may require a spacer depending on wheel spoke design. Utilising OEM sized discs and OEM EK9 pad profile these calipers offer the user access to many different braking compounds to suit all budgets - we can supply either Spoons own braking compound / discs or an alternative from DIXCEL.
The Spoon Monoblock calipers - (shown in the second image) http://www.spoonsports.eu/45020-mbf-g01.html is designed for use with a 300mm brake disc. Due to this you will also need to replace the OEM discs and pads when installing to the models listed above. We can supply the correct size Spoon 300mm conversion disc (or we can offer DIXCEL alternatives) - http://www.spoonsports.eu/45251-5h11416.html and an S2000 profile brake pads that are required. A small amount of modification will again be required to the disc heat shield but otherwise with the correct parts installation is very simple. This set-up will normally require a 16 inch + wheel and again spoke design will govern if a spacer is required.
SPOON BRAKE CALIPERS INTRODUCTION
Two of the many questions we get asked repeatedly are “which Spoon caliper fit my car” and “what parts do I need to fit them” ..
To answer this over the next few days we are going to produce a number of blog posts to help people choose the right products for their cars and understand what is required for the installations. So firstly we will kick off the series of blog posts with an overview of the Spoon Cllipers
Twinblock:
Spoon calipers are manufactured by Nissin, the OE supplier of all Honda brakes. The twin-block caliper was developed over a year specifically for the EK9 Civic Type R and DC2 Integra Type R however conversion parts are available to allow fitment to other Honda Models. The Twinblock caliper requires a minimum rim diameter of 15 inches.
The Twinblock caliper has 4 piston and has been specifically designed and tested for Honda applications. Unlike other 4 piston calipers, Spoon calipers are a direct fit and are designed to work with the stock brake system, including the ABS. Spoon calipers use OE Honda brake pad profile and 282mm OE Honda brake rotor, which gives users incredible flexibility in choosing braking compounds and rotors.
The 4-pot calipers significantly improve both high speed braking and brake pedal feel and its consistency during track use. They evenly distribute pressure across the pad back plate to allow the pads to wear more even which in turn minimizes rotor warpage. The Twinblock aluminium construction also helps reduce un-sprung weight significantly – Spoon 2.4kg OE DC2 5.2kg. These benefits are achieved while maintaining a stock feel for daily driving.
Monoblock:
Like the Twinblock the Spoon Monoblock is again manufactured by Nissin the OE manufacture of all Honda Brakes. This time the caliper adopts the use of the larger 300mm OE Honda Discs and is made from a single piece casting increasing caliper rigidity and strength.
Developed and tested in races, endurance races, on the road and through computer CAE analysis the Monoblock design was conceived for use with the more modern Honda models in mind like the S2000 and Civic Type R EP3 and FN2 to name a few. Like the Twinblock, the Monoblock are a direct fit and have been designed to work with the stock brake system, including the ABS. As the caliper utilises the larger rotor diameter a minimum rim diameter of 16 inches is required.
The 4 piston design has all the same benefits as the Twinblock. The single piece construction results in significant weight reductions in un sprung weight – Spoon 2.6kg OE AP1 4.7kg.
PART 2: ZF1 Honda CR-Z Spoon Inspired Race Car
CRZ Race Car Build Part 2:
So with our application for car no. 95 in, it was time to work out our plan of attack for our Cartek Roadsports Race Car. With very little time before the first race at Donnington on 28th March, we had to make sure that all angles were covered to ensure the complete compliance of our machine. Once the regulations for 2015 were released we mocked out our project plan and began with preparing the car for it's first major milestone, THE ROLLCAGE. We set to work by removing all unnecessary trim and items from the car which dramatically changed its appearance and shed approx. 80kgs. Not bad for starters.
Not satisfied that we'd shed enough weight yet we proceeded to continue removing all unnecessary items including: sound deadening material, A/C system, heater matrix and more. It's extremely important to me that we incorporate the true essence of Spoon Sports and adopt their famous 1/1000 philosophy, whereby every gram saved and every 1/1000s gained is essential and nothing should be allowed to exist without reason or purpose.
Once this was completed there was only the IMA system to take care of before we could get her loaded up. We found the IMA system to be surprisingly straight forward to isolate and remove. However given the potential for things to go wrong, we strongly advise anyone who is not trained to seek assistance when looking to carry out any work on the IMA system.
Finally it was time to say "sayōnara, さようなら" to our baby and take her up to SW Motorsports to get the cage fitted and the interior sprayed and ready for our first test day, which was scheduled for 13th March. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank my old man for his help. Without your valued help we could never have got the car up there and kept this project on track, so thank you.
Whilst the car was away we also had positive confirmation from our brake system sponsor, HEL Performance, that they would happily provide us with a complete system for the car. Whilst installing the system a bias valve was fitted to allow us more control over the behaviour of the car under braking. We are confident that this, coupled with our world renowned Spoon Sports monobloc callipers, DIXCEL racing brake fluid, DIXCEL pads and discs will make for an impressive setup and give the CR-Z the edge on the brakes. This allowed us to shed even more weight off of the car, by enabling us to remove all solid brake lines, the ABS unit and associated plumbing. The engine bay is beginning to look a little empty!
James Rudecki CR-Z Race Car Build:
We are pleased to announce a good friend of Spoon Sports Europe, James Rudecki is well under way with his very special CR-Z build as he endeavours to embark on a journey from parts to race track.
Whist the CR-Z will be packed with Spoon goodies, including some one off parts there will be many new innovations and challenges to overcome along the way. We will bring you updates in the coming months.
Here is an introduction to the project from James:
Even from the beginning there was no competition in my mind, it was Honda all the way.
Starting out in my early teens, my focus was originally to Honda Bikes and working with my old man to restore some classics. I was always impressed by the brilliant engineering and focus put towards giving the rider/ driver the best experience possible. From even further back I was a fan of Spoon. Since GT2 days in fact, when I was always favouring their EK9 and S2K as I’m sure many of you did too.
Then in 2010 came a turning point. The CR-Z. I was intrigued by this car and its futuristic looks as well as the IMA hybrid system. After a single test drive it was clear that this was the car for me and the beginning of the journey which leads us to this build. Although the CR-Z doesn’t have hundreds of horses, there is something about this car which makes it so brilliant to drive and after learning of Spoon Japan’s ventures with this, often misunderstood, car I was determined to create something for the UK. Something to change the image of this car and also promote the excellent workmanship and quality of Spoon Sports. After visiting type one recently it is clear to me that there is something missing in the UK tuning scene and I think that truly understanding Ichishima San’s philosophy goes a great deal towards filling that void, and I hope my CR-Z will demonstrate that here in the UK.
I first got the car back in Jan 2011 as a leased car.
When the lease ended it was an easy decision to stay CR-Z. ZF2 please J.
Meeting the type one guys a couple of weeks ago really inspired me greatly with this build and I would like to say thanks for all the time they spent with me and the questions they answered.
On returning to the UK the decision to enter the CARTEK Roadsports Endurance Series was made. Although this season will likely be more for setup and data collection I’m sure it will be hugely enjoyable and prove the CR-Z as a serious contender. My partner in crime will be my best friend Bobby who has already helped with the stripdown. We are awaiting the release of the series regulations next week, but the build will include significant work to the most aspects of the car, including the chassis, engine, drivetrain, suspension and brakes. We are really excited and will be working closely with Spoon Sports Europe on this build so stay tuned for more build and race updates.
Thanks.
James and Bobby.
TEAM SPOON in the #95 Fit3 will be taking on Round 2 of the Super Taikyu series at Sugo this weekend. Preparation and practice laps are under way and with a Round 1 win under the belt, we are all looking forward to seeing how the vehicle and drivers perform.
GO TEAM SPOON!
As the Spoon JP Crew are out of office racing, they have noted that unfortunately our due shipment will be slightly delayed. This shipment includes the remaining Team Jackets that have been ordered but we expect to receive and start dispatching by the end of the month.
Thanks to all the fans who ordered Jackets, we were truly shocked at the influx of emails and messages regarding them. The remaining Jackets, now only in S/M/L are of limited quantity and will be available only through the website Merchandise Section as of today. Once these are gone, that’s it!
However… Further merchandise is soon to be released including LTD Edition T-Shirts, Hoody’s and more, so keep an eye on the News Feed as details will soon follow.
Thanks to all from Spoon Sports Europe
